Ultimate Sacrifice

churchsign.jpg

Thanks to all the hogs, chickens, ducks, doves, fish or anything that flies, hops or swims for making the ultimate sacrifice.

This revolting line of text glared at me from a flyer this morning as I punched in at work. It advertises a Christian men’s retreat that has been organized by a preacher that I work with.

What a disgusting view of the animal kingdom! They’ve become little more than playthings; something to taunt, tease and torture before killing and devouring. I don’t use those terms as an ill-informed animal activist - I’ve actually heard the stories directly from the participants, especially from the organizer himself.

These same people are so vehement in their support of the “sanctity of life” when it comes to the abortion issue, yet they cannot show God’s other creatures the same respect. Yes, God may have provided certain animals for our benefit (food, clothing, etc), but that is all the more reason to respect our co-inhabitants of this planet. It would seem the American Indians knew best how to deal with nature - only take what you need, never more.

I also find it interesting that the creator of the flyer actually believes that the animals are giving the “ultimate sacrifice”, as if they are willingly becoming the next meal. I’m sure, if given the chance, any of them would rather live out their lives in peace instead of winding up on a campfire or dinner plate.

Killing everything in sight and then sharing your testimony just doesn’t sound like a fun weekend to me. There’s also an element of irony in there somewhere that I can’t quite put my finger on…

I made the above church sign to show the absurdity of combining religion with hunting. I’ve seen that slogan on bumper stickers. Make your own sign here: Church Sign Generator

Is this sign for real?!?!? There have been numerous occasions where I have literally almost driven off the road at reading something on a church sign. Add this to the list.
