Consider The Lilies

When I was young, I would sing “Consider The Lilies” in church quite often. Because we never had a program for our services, it wasn’t something that was planned in advance and a member of the congregation would simply request that I get up and sing.

A recent blog entry by a friend about “worry” contained the following Bible passage and reminded me of the song.

“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?

“And why do you worry about clothes? See how the lilies of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. (Matthew 6:25-34 NIV)

Consider The Lilies
Performed By Candy Hemphill

Consider the lilies
They don’t toil or spin
And there’s not a king
With more splendor than them
Consider the sparrow
They don’t plant or sow
But they’re fed by the master
Who watches them grow

We have a heavenly father above
With eyes full of mercy
And a heart full of love
He really cares when
Your head is bowed low
Consider the lilies
And then you will know

May I introduce you
To this friend of mine
Who hangs out the stars
And tells the sun when to shine
He kisses the flowers
Each morning with dew
But He’s not too busy
To love me and you

We have a heavenly father above
With eyes full of mercy
And a heart full of love
He really cares when
Your head is bowed low
Consider the lilies
And then you will know

I have never heard this song. I guess us Methodist’s sing the same dozen songs over and over. LOL.

I saw a good church sign recently, it said, “Birds have bills too, but they still sing”. Your post reminded me of that.

    Brian,

I had heard this song before, but it has been years ago. Thanks for the reminder. I’ve been humming the chorus all day long. Thanks for the encouragement.

i have thought of this song so many times over the years - i used to sing this song all the time as a teenager, and thru the years, thru so many mistakes, trials and life’s tribulations i can honestly say that I know without a doubt that God is taking care of me. Just like the song, how much more does he love us, so why should we worry?? I’m so excited to finally connect with these lyrics again … thanks to the person that posted this!!!!! God Bless!!
