The founder of Focus On The Family, James Dobson, is slamming Obama for “distorting” the Bible. Obama merely stated the obvious recently when he pointed out the problems that would arise if Christians abode by certain verses in Leviticus, or if our Defense Department practiced the commandments Jesus gave in his “Sermon on the Mount.”
In the speech, Obama suggested that it would be impractical to govern based solely on the word of the Bible, noting that some passages suggest slavery is permissible and eating shellfish is disgraceful.
“Which passages of scripture should guide our public policy?” Obama asked in the speech. “Should we go with Leviticus, which suggests slavery is OK and that eating shellfish is an abomination? Or we could go with Deuteronomy, which suggests stoning your child if he strays from the faith? Or should we just stick to the Sermon on the Mount?
“So before we get carried away, let’s read our Bible now,” Obama said, to cheers. “Folks haven’t been reading their Bible.”
He also called Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount “a passage that is so radical that it’s doubtful that our Defense Department would survive its application.”
Isn’t distorting the Bible exactly what Dobson does when he uses God’s word to discriminate against homosexuals on a daily basis? Dobson also took issue with Obama’s “fruitcake” view of The Constitution, which is ironic when one considers that Dobson supports changing our government’s most fundamental document to ban gay marriage.
Mr. Dobson also apparently missed the verse in the New Testament where Jesus told the rich man to sell everything he had and give it to the poor. That’s gonna hurt old Dobson’s pocketbook, considering that he makes millions of dollars a year claiming to be the sole authority on Christian parenting.
Mr. Dobson, focus on your own damn family.

I love double think! Most people can be slapped in the face by it and still not know what happened. Imagine. Picture this if you will, some people suggest that certain elites hoisted Christianity on the Romans. They gave the Roman slaves the Christian mental clap. I am sure you have never imagined what weaponized religion looks like. Here is an article written 1928. Read it and tell me what you think?

Brian,
I’m glad you wrote about this! I read about it earlier and Dobson’s statements are so irrational. Obama’s comments on religion, however, made my day. I’m slowly developing appreciation for him.
There are times my radio dial wanders over the spectrum, and it’s occasionally landed on some of Dobson’s programming. I remember in particular, little vignettes whose plot is inevitably to go have good old beneficent godly grandfather sort it all out. Yeah.
DOBSON is the fruitcake.
The man is an asshat.
Somewhere in the same time frame/interview, Dobson was stating that he’s a psychologist, not a minister.
If he’s NOT a minister, then where exactly is his authority to speak on anything Bible-related?
Methinks the man with the smallest, pebble-sized cajones in the evangelical universe doth protest too much… or he’s an attention whore and shows up conveniently in any election cycle.
Oh - I like the new template, btw.
@ sideon: Thanks for noticing the change. I enjoy giving my site a makeover quite often.
Heh - I’ve stuck with a black template for years.
Love that slimming effect, ya know.
Be well.
